Sorrel Leaves Dal

Gongura Pappu
Ingredients:
Indian Sorrel Leaves 1 bunch(50-60 leaves)
Chana dal 1/2 cup
Green chillies 4-6
Red chilli powder 1 tsp
Turmeric powder a big pinch
Red Onion 1 large
Garlic pods 6-8
Salt to taste
Talimpu:
Cumin seeds 1 tsp
Mustard seeds 1 tsp
Broken red chillies 4-6
Oil 2 tsps
Method of preparation:
Wash thoroughly and chop sorrel leaves roughly.
Remove stems, wash and slice green chillies into halves.
Chop onion finely.
Remove skins and bruise garlic pods a little.
In a pot, bring to boil few cups of water.
Add chana dal and let it cook for few minutes.
When dal is cooked with its shape intact, add chopped sorrel leaves, green chillies and onion.
Cook covered for few minutes before adding garlic pods, salt, turmeric powder and red chilli powder.
Cook for 5 more minutes and follow the below steps for talimpu.
In a small pan, heat oil.
Add all talimpu ingredients in order.
When mustard seeds crackle, add this to the above dal.
Mix well and serve hot with rice.
Notes: If dal is too watery, mix rice flour with little water and add to dal and cook for few minutes.
