Chukka Kura Pappu

Ingredients:

Khatta Palak / Chukka Kura 2 small bunches
Toor Dal 1 1/2 cups
Green Chiles 4
Garlic 4 pods
Turmeric Powder 1/2 tsp
Salt to taste

Talimpu:

Urad Dal 1 tsp
Mustard Seeds 1 tsp
Cumin Seeds 1/2 tsp
Broken Red Chiles 4
Curry Leaves 8
Asafoetida a pinch
Oil 1 tsp

Method of preparation:

Wash toor dal under water thoroughly and pressure cook in 3 cups of water for 3 whistles.
Clean, wash, remove stems and roughly chop chukka kura.
Peel and lightly mash garlic pods.
Remove stems, wash and slit the green chiles.

Heat oil in a deep vessel, add all talimpu ingredients in order.
When mustard seeds start spluttering, add green chiles, chopped chukka kura, turmeric powder and salt.
once the leaves wilt, add cooked toor dal along with a cup of water if the cooked toor dal is too thick.
Bring the dal to a bubble and then remove from heat.
Serve hot with rice or roti.

Notes: You can also cook the dal and leaves together and do the tempering at end.
